Reflecting on a Year in the Garden

Reflecting on a Year in the Garden

From Scruffy Hillside to Flower Haven

It’s a week before Thanksgiving, and tonight, the first snowflakes of the season began to fall. My dahlia tubers are safely tucked away, patiently waiting for the spring wake-up call. The vibrant blooms that brought so much joy this year are gone, leaving behind fond memories. While winters in Wisconsin often get a bad rap, I find comfort in the slower pace they bring. There’s something rejuvenating about hibernating in a warm house, dreaming of the next growing season.

With this peaceful evening as inspiration, I’ve decided to start a blog—just a little space to share my journey. But before diving into what’s ahead, it feels right to reflect on how far things have come.

When I first dreamed of creating a cut flower garden at Century Oaks, I struggled to find the right spot. I wanted a space that felt like an extension of home—a place to enjoy the beauty every day—and of course, it needed full sun. After plenty of pondering (and a fair amount of wandering the property), I found the perfect location: a scruffy hillside with potential waiting to bloom.

The transformation wasn’t easy. Trees needed clearing, and poison ivy decided it wasn’t going down without a fight. But with determination (and a good pair of gloves), I turned that space into a haven for flowers.

As I reflect on the progress made this year, I’m filled with gratitude for the journey. From clearing the hillside to planting the first seeds, every step brought me closer to creating the garden space I’d always imagined.

So, as the garden sleeps, I’ll be here, reflecting on the journey and planning for what’s to come. Whether you’re here for gardening tips or just to follow along, I’m so glad to have you with me.
